The objective of the mission was to assess the potential world heritage value of the site of Khor Dubai, to advise AHD, the Architectural Heritage Department of Dubai Municipality, on the steps to be implemented in view of its eventual nomination for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and to prepare the draft of the Tentative List file to be submitted by UAE, according to the UNESCO format.

Dubai is commonly perceived as the quintessential post-modern city characterized by its distinctive skyline. However, the richness and fame of the modern metropolis are the result of the rapid evolution of the original merchants’ settlement that developed on the two banks of Dubai Creek since the second half of the 19th century. The tangible and intangible vestiges of this early phase are still visible and deserve to be preserved and presented to a larger public.

L’objectif de la mission à Dubai était d’évaluer le potentiel patrimonial du site de Khor Dubai en vue d’une éventuelle candidature pour inscription sur la liste du Patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, de conseiller le Département du Patrimoine Architectural de la ville de Dubai sur les étapes techniques et administratives à suivre pour déposer la candidature, et de préparer la fiche de Khor Dubai pour la Liste Indicative des EAU selon le format de l’UNESCO.

Dubai est perçue comme la ville post-moderne par excellence, mais la richesse et la renommée de la ville moderne sont le résultat de la croissance extraordinaire du centre marchand qui se développa sur les deux rives de la crique (Khor Dubai) dans la deuxième moitié du XIXème siècle. Les vestiges matériels et immatériels de cette période sont encore visibles et constituent un patrimoine significatif qui mérite d’être connu et préservé.
