The town of Civita di Bagnoregio, located on the edge of the ancient volcano Volsini in central Italy, is built on a high tuff peak that rests on fragile clay. For centuries, Civita residents have tried to hinder the natural degradation of the cliff and the town became a paradigm of the struggle of men trying to oppose a hostile natural environment dismantling and eroding all reliefs.

RC Heritage mission analysed the heritage significance of the site and its World Heritage Potential and identified a coherent strategy for the nomination of the property. In collaboration with the Italian geologist Claudio Margottini, RC Heritage has drafted the Italian Tentative List file for the Italian Ministry of Culture.

The Outstanding Universal Value of the Cultural Landscape of Civita di Bagnoregio lies in two distinct and complementary aspects: the exceptionally well-preserved urban and architectural structures which testify the interaction between man and nature; and the unique geological characteristics of the site with its extraordinarily rapid evolution. The Cultural Landscape of Civita di Bagnoregio was included on the Italian Tentative List at UNESCO in 2017.
